Glen Iris Wetlands Environment Centre

An entire house will be recycled to construct Stonnington’s first environmental hub. Architects working on the sustainable design for the Glen Iris Wetlands Environment Centre have won Stonnington Council’s support to buy and cut up a house, and relocate it to TH King Oval in Glen Iris. The centre, expects to be built by 2011, will consume less energy than it produces and use no air conditioning, even in summer. The council wants the building to show how sustainability can be achieved without a huge cost. All the council’s “Top 10 Tips for a Sustainable Home” have been included in the PHOOEY Architects’ design. “Teaching the next generation about energy efficiency around the home that will save both money and tick the environment box is a worthwhile investment for the future,” says Cr Tim Smith.
